Some of our CMO Within Reach followers and customers recently noticed that we are no longer on Twitter. This was a conscious decision on our part.

There were several factors that went into this decision:

Not good for business.

When we created our Twitter account several years ago, we weren’t sure it was a good platform for our line of business. Our experiment proved that there was no inherent business value from our presence on Twitter. We did not secure any new clients, business intelligence, or benefit from our followers’ posts. CMO Within Reach advises our clients to wisely choose only the...

Over the years, I’ve been surprised by some new client reactions when it came time to pay for the marketing services they request from my company, CMO Within Reach. You see, we don't bill our clients after the work is done. Instead, we outline the work to be done in a proposal along with a retainer agreement, and then at the end of the billing cycle, send a statement summarizing the work done and how much of the retainer was used for the work done. Yes, I said a retainer.

To most professional service providers, this is not a surprise. If you're surprised by retainer agreements for m...

Truth and the legality of truth have been in the news a great deal lately. It applies to all aspects of life, from personal relationships, to government, advertising and marketing. The defense of consumers against sellers of misinformation have created a self-perpetuating industry.

I got side-tracked by the lure of corporate marketing and communications at the time, but my passion for consumer protection was unwavering. The movement had its...

According to countless industry reports, including press coverage in Forbes and consulting reports by McKinsey & Company (to name a few), the glory days of the CMO (Chief Marketing Officer) are over. Okay, I get what they're saying -- that the shareholder pressures of large corporations have demanded that all executives have to contribute in ways beyond just strategy and broaden their roles to be more impactful.  Noted.

However, as with so many topics covered in the media, this notion cannot be oversimplified.

First, the "CMO" from the days of Mad Men rarely still exist in any c...

As more and more of our economy shifts to the service sector (consulting, concierge services, healthcare, technology, etc.) and away from manufacturing, customer service is a critical part of the service offerings. Perhaps it has always been the case, but lately, I'm noticing many blogs, professional posts, and "how to" articles about providing great "customer service".  Ironically, the more emphasis I see placed on customer service, the worse my personal customer service experiences seem to get.  I'm often amused by the frequent line I hear on customer service calls, "have I provided you with...

At CMO Within Reach, we're often asked by clients how to protect their work via copyrights and trademarks. Though we work with attorneys in our network who specialize in these matters, we don't offer binding legal advice. Rather, we refer our clients to an attorney and provide best practices since making a mistake when it comes to a copyright can get you into serious legal and financial trouble.

We found this useful graphic on a post by which sheds some light on when copyright laws apply — and if not, what your other options are for protecting work.
